Irritable Bowel Syndrome Signs And Symptoms

Irritable bowel syndrome signs and symptoms can vary from person to person and can include stomach pain, bloating, cramping and alternating constipation and diarrhoea. However, a person suffering from this disorder may suffer from some or all of these problems.

For most sufferers leaky gut symptoms are mild but in some cases they can be quite debilitating and distressing. It is common for symptoms to subside for periods, sometimes for months, and then return while some people report that the symptoms get worse with time. Typically twice as many women suffer from IBS hence the theory that the problem could be hormone related.

Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS or leaky gut) is a complaint relating to the intestines. IBS is a very common disorder with over 20% of American adults suffering from the disorder. Unfortunately because of the nature of the symptoms of many people are embarrassed to discuss it and less 50% actually seek medical help.

Because irritable bowel syndrome doesn’t cause any changes in bowel tissue or cause inflammation like some other diseases of the intestine (e.g. Crohn’s Disease and ulcerative colitis) it has not been found to cause more serious diseases such as colorectal cancer. If you think you have irritable bowel syndrome it is important to consult your medical practitioner. Even though there is no special test for the problem, your doctor can perform tests that will preclude other problems. It is basically a process of elimination. These tests may include a colonoscopy, blood and stool sample tests, food intolerance tests and X-rays. They will also need a detailed history from you.

What causes irritable bowel syndrome is not known but it is believed that stress and certain foods may cause the problem. Another theory is that IBS is a caused by a change in the sensitivity of the nerves controlling the muscle contractions in the bowels.  Other theories are that it is related to the central nervous system or possibly hormonal.
Many people find that their leaky gut syndrome symptoms are affected by certain foods. Foods to avoid with irritable bowel syndrome vary from person to person and may not necessarily be the cause of the problem but actually be intolerance to those foods e.g. the lactose (sugar) in dairy products or caffeine in drinks. Constipation or diarrhoea may be noticed by people who suffer from IBS if they drink chocolate milk or alcohol while bloating may result if some vegetables or carbonated drinks are consumed. It is important to take note of any foods that trigger leaky gut and avoid them.

A common question is what are effective medications for Irritable bowel syndrome? In mild cases, diet for irritable bowel syndrome and lifestyle changes are ways of controlling the problem. This may include diet changes like eliminating foods known to cause gas and bloating, adding extra fibre to the diet, medication to help control bowel spasms and medications to control diarrhoea. In addition antidepressants may be prescribed to provide extra control over the intestines and these may also help if stress is an issue. Relaxation techniques are also useful in handling stress. There are some drugs available but these are usually recommended only if these other methods fail.

Irritable bowel syndrome signs and symptoms, as you can see, is a very difficult problem to diagnose due to the possibility that other factors may be the root cause of the problem but with sound advice and some lifestyle changes it can, in most cases, be controlled.
